Essential Palm Tungsten T and T2 software
The Palm Tungsten T is a great little device but the slider that covers the digitizer area means it is a bit slower to get to functions than with other Palms. To overcome this disadvantage here are the software packages that I use.
5Nav Launcher (Freeware)
I have configured 5Nav Launcher to run when I press the 'to do' hard button. From here I can then choose from up to 21 frequently used applications just using the 4 way controller and action button. I have set the central shortcut up to the application launcher so I can then launch any application on my Tungsten without opening the slider.
NewPen (Freeware)
NewPen allows you to write graffiti directly onto the screen. When used in conjunction with 5Nav launcher there is no need to ever open the slider! That is maybe too hopeful an aim as some applications do not allow all their controls to be used with it. Pressing on-screen buttons is also sometimes tricky. It is however easy to activate/deactivate NewPen by pressing on the square at the bottom right of the screen which turns dashed to show NewPen is switched off.
Switch5 (Freeware)
Switch5 remembers the most recent applications you have used. I have set it up to come up either when I press the notepad hard button (far right) or when I drag the stylus from menu to applications on the silkscreen. This is great when you are working with 2 or 3 programs and allows you to switch quickly between them without going back to the application launcher (or 5Nav Launcher).
Other nice software
Here are some other good apps I like.
AeroPlayer (from US$14.95)
AeroPlayer is a music that can play OGG, MP3, AAC. On my Tungsten T using the AAC decoder causes it to hang up so I enly encode my music using MP3. Another problem is that after a hard reset sometimes the sound balance goes all the way to left channel only. The default skin doesn't allow you to change the balance so you have to download a skin such as DVMobile that allows you to rectify this.
Aerodrome software seems to have good support to registered users. I had a problem when I changed my Palm's ID and they sorted it out through e-mail within a day or 2.
Color Doodle (Freeware)
Color Doodle is a very simple little graphics app. I find it great for keeping young children entertained when waiting around and there are no toys handy, and also for drawing simple maps. The UI is very intuitive for kids apart from returning from the palette screen where you have to click OK: not so easy to explain to someone who is too young to read!
HandyShopper 2 (Freeware)
HandyShopper is good for making shopping lists as it can be told which aisle of a supermarket the goods are found on, then present you with your shopping list in aisle order. Very useful if you go to different stores and haven't remembered where they keep all their produce. Annoying if the supermarkets keep changing their stock locations around!
Planetarium (€24 shareware)
If you have any interest at all in the night sky then Planetarium is great fun. It is shareware and there is a nag screen which disappears when you register. You can identify all the constellations in the sky, see where the planets are and when the moon will rise and set. The interface is quite tricky to work out at first but once understood it is efficient to use.
