Palm Tungsten T, T2, T3 PDA repair notes
Shortly after buying a second hand Palm Tungsten T PDA I realised it had a screen drift problem with the digitiser. Some google searching found this thread, with links to this page on disassembling your Tungsten T/T2/T3.
I found the dissasembly part of using a paper clip to release the slider of my Tungsten non straightforward so here are my notes and photos.
Disclaimer: Try this at your own risk. It will void your warranty. I have only tried it on the Tungsten T and do not know for sure that it will work for the Tungsten T2 and T3.
1. I don't think it is necessary to remove the 2 screws in the top rear of the unit - just the 4 screws (2 on each side) at the sides of the slider.
2a. The spring pushing action was easy for the left hand hole, but the right hand hole offered a lot of resistance. Look at these photos below to understand how the mechanism works that you are trying to disassemble. Referring to the first photo, pressing a paperclip through the left hand hole pushes down on the metal part A which moves the ridge B down enough so that the upper edge of C can ride over the ridge. A similar situation applies to part D, although there is less give in this spring and it is covered in a white metal plastic piece. You can see the metal parts attached to the slider better on the second photo.
2b. I used a slightly different method by separating the back of the slider from the unit first. I kept the connector attached to the back and left the metal side parts of the slider attached to the front. Then I could press on the left hand spring and ease the right hand spring off. If you try this method be very careful not to break any of the plastic parts.
3. The large connector in the centre of the back should be the only one that needs cleaning/reseating. I used a small flat head watchmakers screwdriver to lever this up, but again you must be very careful not to damage anything. A straight pull up would be better but is difficult to acheive.
4. So far it has worked very well for me. The digitizer response is now excellent. Before it was very flaky, especially on the left hand side of the screen.
